According to The Qur’an, Allah is The First and The Last, and The Outermost and The Innermost:

“He is the First and the Last, the Outermost and the Innermost and He has full knowledge of all things,” – The Qur’an, 57:3.

This is very interesting, because the first and the last name of Allah, to occur in The Qur’an is Ilah, “God.” The first chapter of The Qur’an is Surat AlFateha, “The Key.” It’s first verse is Bismillah Irrahman Irraheem,” which  means, “In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious The Most Merciful,” (notice how it says, “In the ‘name’ of Allah” – for this occurrence of the name “Allah” is part of the particular phenomena I am showing). The Last chapter of The Qur’an is Surat AnNas, “The People.” The last verse to contain a name of Allah in this chapter and thus in The Whole Qur’an  is 114:3 which says, “ilah innas,” “God of the people.” So in 1:1 of The Qur’an is the name “Allah,” and in 114:3 is “Ilah;” the name “Ilah,” is the root of “Allah.” “Ilah,” means “God,” and “Allah” means “The God.” So the name “Ilah,” “God” is the first name of Allah to occur in The Qur’an and the last name of Allah to occur in The Qur’an.

Since the present order of the chapters of The Qur’an is not the same as the chronological order in which they were revealed, for Allah had specified the present order before Muhhamad’s death, Surat AnNas is the last chapter of The Qur’an but not the final chapter that was revealed. The first surah to be revealed in chronological order of revelation, was Surat Al’alaq, “The Embryo.”  Surat AnNasr, “The Help,” was the last surah revealed. So this means the first words of The Qur’an that were revealed are the Bismillah of Surat Al’alaq, which is Surah 96; and the last words of The Qur’an revealed were the last words of Surat AnNasr, which is Surah 110. It follows thus that the first name of Allah revealed chronologically in The Qur’an is in the Bismillah of Surat Al’alaq, which is “Allah.” And the last name of Allah that occurred chronologically in The Qur’an is in Surat AnNasr, 110:2 and is also “Allah.” So even in the chronological order of the Surahs of The Qur’an, (“surah” means “chapter”), the first name of Allah and the last name of Allah to occur are both “Allah.”

More interesting than the literal meaning of the verse are its philosophical implications. Read Ghazzaali’s thoughts on the creation of time.

    • Is Ghazzaali a translator of The Qur’an? What would be a good source of information, for me to study Ghazzaali? I must study things carefully, so that, by Allah, I may know what I am talking about.

Imam Al-Ghazzaali is a the most influential Islamic scholar in the history of Islamic theology and philosophy. A lot of his works are translated, but probably best if you don’t try to read them alone. It’s very heavy philosophy at times, so he can be pretty obtuse.

If you’re looking for a good tafsir, Mufti Shafi Usmani has a really nice one that’s been translated into English. It’s called “Ma’aariful Qur’an”. There’s the classic Tafseer Ibn Katheer, and Tafseer al-Jalaalayn has been translated too. Although, Ma’aariful Quran was written for laymen; I’m not sure about the others.
