Belief Redeems the Mind

In the name of The God, The Most Gracious The Most Merciful.

My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whispers of the devils. And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they come near me. I seek refuge in The God from Satan the Rejected.

The Arabic word for “mind,” “soul,” “self,” or “ego” is “nefs.”

Here in Surah 91 of The Qur’an we learn that by purifying the mind, we achieve redemption from God:

“By the Sun and the forenoon. By the Moon as he follows her.By the daylight as it brightens. By the Night as it covers. By the sky and its structure. By the land and her expanse. By the Soul, and her balance. And He then inspired in her the understanding of the wrong and the right. Indeed, successful is the one who purifies her. And indeed has failed the one who betrays her. Thamoud rejected it rebelliously. It only brought out the worst in them. However, messenger of God had told them; it is God’s camel, so water her. But, they rejected him, and they maimed her, therefore their Lord spoke angrily with them because of their sin, and He then established the balance. And they never feared its consequences.”

This surah also shows that belief purifies the mind; for after it mentions the purification of the mind, it then goes on to tell the story of how the people of Thamoud disbelieved in God or God’s messenger that was sent to them. They did not heed God’s message. Thamoud is only one of the examples of this concept given in The Qur’an; part of the message that was given to them specifically, besides the main and most important message of strict monotheism, was to refrain from animal cruelty – hence the details about what happened with them and God’s camel. But the main point is that they did not believe in God or God’s messenger, and thus betrayed their own minds; and as a result, they failed, and incurred God’s retribution. Thus it is by belief in God and God’s messengers, that by God’s grace we purify our minds and achieve eternal life in Heaven and bliss in the Hereafter. In the name of my Lord the Great, I glorify my Lord Most High. Glory be to The God, The Lord of the worlds!
